New rhino lifted into cage at Edinburgh Zoo
07th May 2010
A new rhinoceros has been lifted by crane into his new enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo. The 18-month-old greater one-horned Indian rhino, who could grow to weigh up to 2. 5 tonnes, arrived by lorry from Stuttgart in Germany.
The rhino, named Samir, was lifted by crane while in his crate and lowered into the bottom paddock before the door of the crate was opened.
He replaces six-year-old Fanindra who is leaving for a breeding programme.
Sue Gaffing, head keeper of Edinburgh Zoo's hoofstock collection, said: "When you are dealing with a creature that is both heavy and potentially dangerous, moving it can be a challenge.
"We want to ensure the animal remains calm even if we may not be feeling the same.
"I'm glad to say the Samir arrived safely at Edinburgh Zoo and is already started to explore his surroundings much to the delight of our visitors. "
