Flights to and from Glasgow and the Hebrides have resumed following earlier disruption caused by drifting ash from the volcanic eruptions in Iceland. Loganair, which runs Flybe services, cancelled flights linking Glasgow to Benbecula and Stornoway on Lewis and between Benbecula and Stornoway.

And flights from Barra to Glasgow and between Glasgow and Tiree were delayed.

Loganair and Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) were able to resume normal services after 1300 BST.

Jonathan Hinkles, commercial director of Loganair, said: "Forecasts for the weekend show the volcanic ash continuing to move west, away from UK airspace, but we do recommend that passengers continue to check the Flybe website before setting out for their airport. "

Airports at Barra, Benbecula and Tiree were closed on Friday morning.

HIAL said: "All passengers are advised to contact their airline for the latest arrivals and departures information.

"Please continue to check with your airline for the latest information on arrivals and departures. "

Ash caused disruption to flights in Scottish airspace earlier this week and had threatened the delivery of ballot boxes from outlying islands to the Western Isles general election count in Stornoway.
