England's 2009 World Cup heroine Nicky Shaw retires
11th July 2010
England all-rounder Nicky Shaw has retired from international cricket. The right-arm seamer, 28, won the player of the match award in the 2009 World Cup final after taking 4-34 as England beat New Zealand in Sydney.
"Whilst I have enjoyed my time playing, I feel it is now time to retire from the international game ahead of my move to Australia," she explained.
Pace bowler Isa Guha replaces Shaw for the one-day international series with New Zealand which begins on Saturday.
Nuneaton-born Shaw made her England debut as a teenager in 1999, and went on to play 70 one-day internationals, 22 Twenty20 internationals and five Tests.
Although she also played in England's Ashes-winning side of 2008 and the ICC World Twenty20 win at Lord's in June 2009, her golden day came in that World Cup triumph three months earlier.
Shaw was only selected to play in the final after team-mate Jenny Gunn suffered a calf injury on the morning of the match at the North Sydney Oval.
But her four-wicket haul broke the back of the Kiwi top order, and later hit three boundaries in an important knock of 17 not out which guided England home.
"I started the day crying, and I finished the day crying," she commented afterwards.
