Southport, Merseyside

Southport is a seaside town in Merseyside, located on the Irish Sea coast, 27km to the north of Liverpool and 24km southwest of Preston.

Historically part of Lancashire, there are many tourist attractions, including Southport Pier and Lord Street, which is a popular tree-lined shopping street, and a fairground which was originally opened in 1912.

Sand dunes stretch for several kilometers between Birkdale and Ainsdale to the south of the town. The Ainsdale sand dunes have been designated as a National Nature Reserve in England and are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Southport hosts a wide range of events each year, including an air show, a flower show, an open air classical music concert, which ends with a fireworks display, a jazz festival and a beer festival. There is an Orangemen's march, on 12th July each year and this is one of the busiest days of the year. Southport also hosts the annual musical fireworks championships and The Open Championship at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club course.
