Crewe has become famous for its railway station, since the Grand Junction Railway chose the site for its locomotive works. It’s believed that Crewe was named after the station, rather than the station being named after the town.
Joseph Lock, chief engineer of GJR (Grand Junction Railway) helped with the layout and development of the town. The company provided many amenities for the town, including Christ Church, Victoria Park, public baths, a school and a cheese market.
Today, Crewe station remains one of the largest in the north-west and a major interchange on the West Coast Main Line. The "Railway Age" Heritage Centre illustrates Crewe's industrial past and links with the railway.
