Local information about Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Located 19km south of Manchester, Alderley Edge is in Cheshire and boasts some excellent restaurants. It also has some quality designer shops, as well as a few speciality food shops.

In Bronze Age and Roman times, copper and lead mining took place in Alderley Edge and the ridge has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its unique geology.

In the 1840s, the expansion of the railway saw the local area increase in population. The Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company built the line through Chorley, offering free season tickets to Manchester businessmen who built houses with a rateable value of more than £50 within a mile of the station. The 'season ticket' was valid for 20 years and was actually a small silver oval which was usually worn on a watch chain.

Following the expansion of the railway network, the railway company wanted to avoid confusion between this and Chorley in Lancashire. So, in 1880, they renamed it Alderley Edge station. The name comes from the old name for the village and the name of the sandstone escarpment already known as The Edge.

A host of famous names have lived in the village, including David Beckham, Andy Cole and stars from Coronation Street.
